WARNING SIGN INSTALLATION AT A9 JUNCTIONS IN INVERNESS

August 8, 2025

  • Enhanced warning signage installation starts on Sunday 17 August for three weeks

  • Lane closures and coned areas with reduced temporary speed limit

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, has been working on measures to improve user safety on the A9. Works are now planned in Inverness at the junctions between the A9 and Sir Walter Scott Drive, Culloden Road and Milton of Leys.

These works are due to start on Sunday 17 August and will last up to three weeks.

The works will include the installation of new chevron signs, hazard marker posts, solar powered bollards and some minor signing amendments.

The planned works should enhance the prominence of the junction islands to reduce the potential for overshoot incidents. These measures are also being installed at other locations on the A9 to provide a consistency of junction appearance along the route.

Work will be undertaken between the hours of 7pm and 6am. The A9 will remain open but a combination of lane closures and lane restrictions with temporary speed limits will be necessary to complete the works safely.

The noisiest operations will take place before 11pm to minimise disruption to surrounding properties. Outwith working hours, the lane closures and lane restrictions will be removed when safe to do so.  Access to properties will be unaffected.

The A9 / A8082 Sir Walter Scott Drive junction will be the first to receive the updates proposed and BEAR Scotland will be coordinating the works with those of Highland Council at Inshes Roundabout.

Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s Northwest Representative, said: “This project will see enhanced warning signage installed at three key A9 junctions south of Raigmore Interchange. This will improve the prominence of the traffic islands at the junctions to help reduce overshoot incidents.

“Our team aim to minimise disruption by scheduling works to be undertaken at night and in coordination with Highland Council works at Inshes roundabout. Our teams will do all they can to finish the project as quickly and safely as possible.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance and would also encourage them to plan their journeys ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
