As part of our new Network Maintenance Contract we have an ambitious programme of bridge maintenance work to deliver including the upgrading or replacement of  life-expired and sub-standard Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) components on structures, including the Caledonian Canal swing bridges on the A82 and A830 between Inverness and Fort William, and operation / maintenance of the Kessock Bridge mobile inspection gantry.  Our current budget for bridge “M&E” maintenance works is £1-2 Million annually.

 

To help deliver this exciting programme of work we are looking for an M&E Engineer with experience of moving structures and/or bridge gantries operation and maintenance to join our existing team, based at our Inverness office.

 

The Engineer / Senior Engineer (M&E) will be involved in managing or carrying out the investigation, design, procurement and construction of a wide variety of bridges M&E schemes.

 

Candidates should have experience of design / maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic bridge components with electrical/electronic or systems control as well as a knowledge of health and safety, environmental and commercial aspects of schemes.

 

We are looking for a self-motivated individual who are interested in progressing their career by helping manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidate will have good team working and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.

 

Job Purpose:

  • The Engineer / Senior Engineer (M&E) will assist, complete or manage the investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of bridge M&E maintenance and replacement works on the network. The postholder will work with internal, consultant and sub-contractors’ resources

Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):

  • Monitor the internal financial performance of individual schemes
  • Follow Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated management systems
  • Assist in the team’s compliance with the CDM Regulations and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place
  • Work as part of a team within NW Major Bridges and with other BEAR departments
  • Update structural records through the clients’ preferred structures management systems
  • Detailed design of bridges M&E projects and the associated cost estimates and the production and retention of adequate design records
  • Produce tender documents and construction phase plans
  • Complete tender evaluations and assisting with contract assessment and award
  • Procure, supervise and measure construction works
  • Compliance with national technical standards (DMRB, BS, BS EN, etc.)
  • Ensuring that adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing
  • Preparation of Departures from Standard when applicable

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Considerable experience in M&E engineering in moving structures and/or bridge gantries
  • Educated to degree level in Mechanical / Systems Engineering, or HND + significant experience
  • Professional qualifications and membership of an appropriate professional body to IEng or able to demonstrate comparable ability and a route to membership
  • A full approved UK driving licence
  • Clear communicator
