BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland.  We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.

Since 2000 we have been involved in five generations of Transport Scotland Trunk Road Operating Company contracts covering various areas of Scotland and are presently responsible for approximately 60% of Scotland’s trunk road network. This includes the North West and South East Scottish Trunk Road Units & M80 DBFO and A92 DBFO.

The South-East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.

Iconic, historic and truly magnificent, Scotland’s Forth Bridges stand as one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks and a true wonder of modern engineering. Towering side by side over the Firth of Forth, the three bridges each showcase the pinnacle of engineering from their respective centuries. 

We have an exciting opportunity for Education Programme Manager to join our existing team on a full-time basis. With a planned retirement in the current team, this role includes a structured handover period, giving the successful candidate in depth organisational knowledge and the opportunity to shape the future of our Education Programme.  

 

The Role: 

As part of this role, you will develop and deliver a comprehensive schools’ education programme designed to inspire young people and promote interest in STEM subjects and careers from primary through to secondary level. This will include: 

  • Creating engaging, practical and relevant content that showcases real life engineering, transport planning, and trunk road management  
  • Delivering sessions both face-to-face and through virtual platforms to reach a wide range of schools and pupils 
  • Embedding key themes such as climate change, netzero, behavioural change and sustainability throughout the programme 
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across BEAR Scotland, making use of the expertise of STEM Ambassadors to enhance delivery and pupil engagement

Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, maintain and manage a comprehensive and diverse education programme that delivers to the varying needs and abilities of primary school pupils, secondary school pupils and schoolwork experience placements 
  • Oversee creation and delivery of educational content that has specific streams to deliver the key themes to each target age group   
  • Seek teacher / learner feedback and use insights to drive continued programme improvements  
  • Support BEAR STEM Ambassadors in development of ideas for school interactions  
  • Establish, develop and share relevant educational relationships and contacts (Developing the Young Workforce coordinators, DYW Live Team)  
  • Reporting and analysis of educational outreach delivered within the programme, feeding into other relevant reports.  
  • Creation of content, organisation and delivery of education elements of key milestone events relating to relevant Transport Scotland assets (Such as bridge anniversaries) 
  • Supporting Transport Scotland in its wider STEM Engineering Programmes, liaising with other units, Eg, Acadamy9 
  • Organisation and management of events to enhance education access for young people out with school events such as Easter and Summer Programmes.  

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

 We are looking for someone who can bring creativity, expertise and enthusiasm to this role.  

 The ideal candidate will have: 

 

  • A degree or relevant professional qualification from a recognised institution  
  • A genuine passion for inspiring young people and encouraging them to explore careers in STEM Engineering  
  • Experience managing a varied programme of activities, ideally across multiple stakeholders or workstreams 
  • Strong engineering and/or transport knowledge, supported by practical project experience across relevant fields.  
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a wider team 
  • Experience developing and delivering educational content, particularly related to engineering themes within STEM  
  • Experience supporting and developing others, enabling colleagues or partners to confidently deliver in this field.
