UPDATE ON PUFFIN CROSSING FOR MAIN STREET, GOLSPIE

April 30, 2026

Updated 7 May 2025: To assist those accessing the polling station today, the traffic management arrangements have changed, as detailed below.

  • Footway resurfacing extended 34 metres

  • Overnight resurfacing starts Tuesday 5 May for three nights

  • Convoy operating on Thursday 7 May from 7.30pm to 10:30pm

  • Lining works between Monday 11 and Friday 15 May

The installation of a new controlled pedestrian crossing continues to progress on the A9 through Main Street, Golspie. The project will enhance safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

Works carried out so far include laying electrical cables, adding kerbing and tactile paving, and installing a built-out kerb area.

On Thursday 7 May, convoy operations will be in place from 7.30pm to 10:30pm to assist those accessing the polling station. From 10:30pm, the road closure will be reinstated with amnesties at 11:30pm, 12:30am, 2:30am and 4:30am with works expected to be completed by 6am on Friday 8 May.

Road lining works will be carried out from Monday 11 May to Friday 15 May. In addition, the footway surfacing works have been extended by around 30 metres to reduce ponding issues on the existing pavement. This additional work means works are currently expected to be completed by Friday 22 May. The final commissioning of the crossing will then take place after appropriate road safety checks have been carried out.

The project follows a series of detailed traffic, pedestrian, and topographical surveys carried out within Golspie. These assessments identified a clear need for a safer and more convenient crossing point on the A9, particularly during peak times.

Michael Baxter, BEAR Scotland’s North West Improvements Scheme Manager said: “The team continue to make good progress on the puffin crossing works in Golspie. Extending the pavement surfacing will address existing ponding issues, providing a smoother finish and more user-friendly environment for pedestrians in Golspie.

“Our teams will carry out the remaining works efficiently, with safety as our top priority. The nature of the works will result in an increase in noise levels, and we apologise in advance for the inconvenience this may cause, and thank the local community and road users for their patience and understanding.”

All works are dependent on the weather. As such, the programme of works may change in the event of adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.
