BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, have been carrying out essential maintenance work on the northbound carriageway of the A9 over Findhorn Bridge near Tomatin since Monday 28 April.
The works involve bridge deck concrete repairs, replacing the waterproofing system, kerb replacement, drainage improvements and resurfacing the road. The numerous recent defects in the road surfacing were an indicator of the underlying problems of the bridge deck.
Following ongoing review of the bridge deck concrete conditions, more extensive repairs than originally anticipated are required, with works now expected to be completed by Friday 26 September.
Northbound traffic is currently being diverted into a 30mph contraflow traffic management system on the southbound carriageway. Traffic is flowing well in this location with minimal delays. The contraflow system will switch to the other side of the carriageway towards the end of August.
Recovery vehicles will be on site whilst the contraflow system is in place to lessen delays from broken down vehicles or any incidents that may occur.
Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said, “As works have progressed, it has become apparent that the A9 Findhorn Bridge needs more extensive concrete repairs than originally expected.
“To allow for the existing concrete to be excavated and replaced in small sections, thereby ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge, we have had to extend the timescale for the project. We thank all road users and the local community for their patience.”
