• Transport Scotland and BEAR Scotland project prioritises active travel and road safety
• Works begin 18 September

Starting on 18 September, BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s operating company, will begin a crucial project to introduce 20mph speed limits in towns and villages along the North West’s trunk road network. This will involve the installation of new 20mph signage and the removal of existing 30mph signage and road markings, to encourage compliance with the new speed limits.

With the goal of reducing vehicle speeds in urban areas to promote active travel and enhance road safety, this initiative represents a significant step towards safer communities. The implementation of 20mph speed restrictions is anticipated to commence during the week beginning 25 September 2023. BEAR Scotland is collaborating with The Highland Council to coordinate rolling out the initiative to trunk and local roads.

To guarantee the complete removal of 30mph road markings, the roundels and red high friction surfacing (HFS) will undergo a removal process known as scrabbling, followed by the reapplication of HFS. Regrettably, this procedure may generate noise. To mitigate disruption, these activities have been scheduled between 7pm and midnight to avoid congestion during the day. The noisiest operations will be carried out as early in the evening as possible to minimise any inconvenience to residents.

The project is scheduled to take place from Monday 18 September to Friday 22 September, between 7pm and midnight each night. Please see the detailed schedule of works below:

• Monday 18 September: A82 Fort Augustus and A82 Drumnadrochit
• Tuesday 19 September: A830 Mallaig
• Wednesday 20 September: A87 Kyle of Lochalsh
• Thursday 21 September: A9 Scrabster Harbour, A9 Helmsdale and A99 Wick
• Friday 22 September: A835 Contin

Temporary traffic lights will be in place and access will be maintained for local residents and businesses throughout the project.
