SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ON THE A99 AT WHITELEEN

June 3, 2026

  • Works to begin on Sunday 14 June

  • Road closure with timed access amnesties

BEAR Scotland, Transport Scotland’s North West trunk road operating company, is set to start essential resurfacing improvements on the A99 at Whiteleen, north of Ulbster.

The works will take place between 7pm and 6am each night, starting on the evening of Sunday 14 June until the morning of Friday 26 June. No work will take place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Due to restricted road widths through this section of the A99, the road will be closed in both directions each night. To allow traffic to pass through the worksite, timed access amnesties will be available at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, midnight, 2am and 4am. Access to emergency services will be available at all times.

Motorists may wish to bypass the works via the A9 and A882.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Euan Burnett, BEAR Scotland’s North West Planned Maintenance Manager, said: “These maintenance works on the A99 at Whiteleen will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for road users.

“The overnight closures are essential to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists.

“We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete this project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”

Real-time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland on www.traffic.gov.scot, X @trafficscotland or the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.
