As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, BEAR Scotland is preparing to roll out the annual programme of cyclic maintenance across the South East and North West trunk road networks.
Spring marks the start of key seasonal activities such as grass cutting, sign cleaning and gully cleaning. These works are essential for maintaining road safety and appearance throughout the warmer months.
The warmer temperatures see vegetation flourish throughout spring and summer, so our teams will be working hard across the network to maintain good visibility at junctions and bends. They’ll also be keeping drainage systems functioning properly to reduce the risk of April showers causing standing water on the carriageway.
In the South East network, BEAR is responsible for litter picking on motorways and dual carriageways, and works with local authorities on other trunk roads to coordinate grass cutting with litter picking. In April, BEAR joined forces with East Lothian and Scottish Borders Councils to carry out an intensive litter pick along two areas of the A1.
Cyclic maintenance like this supports our wider commitment to keeping the trunk roads safe for the communities, businesses and visitors who rely on them every day.
If you’re out and about exploring more of Scotland in the sunshine – or whatever weather the season brings – remember to drive with extra care near work sites and follow any temporary signs or speed restrictions to help protect our teams on the ground as they spruce up the network.
