Cameron Redpath

We are supporting Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2021 by showcasing some of the brilliant work that our apprentices do across the company. The week celebrates and encourages people to consider an apprenticeship as a valuable route to a successful career. We asked Cameron, an Apprentice Technician in our South East Planned Maintenance team, about what he has learned during his apprenticeship at BEAR Scotland.

What’s your name and current role?

My name is Cameron Redpath and I’m currently an Apprentice Technician within the South East team at BEAR Scotland.

What first interested you in engineering?

I first became interested in engineering at school. I managed to complete a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering Systems while in my final year which I really enjoyed.

What does your job entail? What does a typical day look like?

I love that each day is different! I work on a number of projects and get to see them through from the initial investigation stages to construction. There are many aspects involved from detailed design and calculations to final construction and supervision of resurfacing schemes.

What route did you take from school?

I first went to Napier University while at school to study mechanical engineering and left in my second year. I knew it wasn’t right for me. I wanted a degree and the apprenticeship route appealed to me as I could gain industry knowledge through hands-on experience in the field, as well as the theoretical studies at university.

How are you finding the apprenticeship process?

My apprenticeship with BEAR Scotland has been a great experience and certainly suits my learning style. I’d recommend it to anyone else considering an apprenticeship in engineering.

What would you say your best achievement is?

Achieving my HNC while I was in school and delivering my first resurfacing scheme with BEAR Scotland are two very proud moments which come to mind!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Don’t rush into any job or degree after leaving school because it seems like the right thing to do. Understand what you’re passionate about and go after exactly what you want!
