SAFETY BARRIER UPGRADE ON THE A702 SOUTHBOUND

January 7, 2026

UPDATE 20 January 2026: These works on the A702 will now take place on Sunday to Friday nights every week, beginning on the night of Sunday 15 February and concluding on the morning of Saturday 7 March.

  • Overnight carriageway closures 15 February to 7 March 2026

The A702 between Hillend Junction and Easter Howgate will be closed between 20:00 and 06:00 on Sunday to Friday nights, beginning on the night of Sunday 15 February and concluding on the morning of Saturday 7 March. This is to allow Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland to carry out improvements to roadside safety barriers.

A diversion route suitable for trunk road traffic will be signposted between Easter Howgate and Hillend Junction, via Bush Loan Road, Gowkley Moss Roundabout, the A701 and the A703 (Seafield Moor Road), adding an estimated 1.9 miles and 4 minutes to affected journeys.

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These barrier improvements on the A702 at Hillend will improve safety for motorists.

“It is essential that we close the carriageway during these works, however we’ve scheduled them to be carried out during overnight hours to minimise any disruption.

“We thank road users in advance for their patience.”

Live traffic information is available from the Traffic Scotland website www.traffic.gov.scot and on X at @trafficscotland.

All works are weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
