BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is continuing essential rock slope stabilisation works on the A82 Trunk Road at the Meeting of Three Waters, approximately six miles east of Glencoe Village.
The project involves vegetation and tree removal, controlled removal of any potentially loose blocks, and reinforcing the slope with rockfall drapery netting and face anchored support mesh.
The works commenced on Monday 5 January and were originally programmed to last up to 18 weeks. However, following further detailed inspections by geotechnical engineers, undertaken after vegetation clearance from the rock slopes, additional stabilisation measures have been identified to provide increased protection against future rockfalls.
As a result, the construction programme has been extended by approximately three weeks, with works now expected to be completed by Monday 1 June. Works are subject to weather and any further unforeseen geological issues.
To ensure the safety of both the workforce and road users, the two‑way temporary traffic lights and a 30mph speed restriction will remain in place for the duration of the works. During safety-critical works, traffic lights will be used to stop traffic in both directions for a maximum of 10 minutes.
Access for emergency services and scheduled bus services will be maintained at all times. There will be no access to the adjacent laybys during the works.
Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.
Michael Baxter, BEAR Scotland’s North West Improvements Scheme Manager said: “As a result of removing vegetation from the slope, more detailed inspections could be carried out, revealing further areas requiring stabilisation.
“While the additional works will extend the programme, it’s necessary to address these areas now to make the slope safer in the long term and reduce the risk of future rockfall affecting the A82.
“We thank the local community and road users for their continued patience while we complete the improvements.”
