Update on 24 September 2026: Due to a poor weather forecast, works on the A87 at Harrapool will not go ahead tonight and will now require an extra night. Works at the South of Portree have been postponed to later in the financial year. See new information below.

• Works start on Monday 14 September

• Overnight road closures & Convoy in place until Wednesday 30 October

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out resurfacing on the A87 between Kyle of Lochalsh and Uig, Isle of Skye, from Monday 14 September.

Works will be carried out between the hours of 7pm and 5am each night; see full programme below:

• South of Skye Bridge / Kyle of Lochalsh (complete): Temporary traffic lights with a convoy system will be in place from the evening of Monday 14 September to the morning of Wednesday 16 September.
• Harrapool: A full road closure with amnesties will be in place each night from the evening of Wednesday 16 September to the morning of Thursday 24 September and the night of Monday 28 September. Local access through the site will be permitted, and the A851 Armadale junction will remain open throughout. No works will take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.
• Uig: Temporary traffic lights with a convoy system will be in place from the evening of Tuesday 29 September until the morning of Wednesday 30 September.
• South of Portree, Braes Junction (North): Postponed

Outwith these hours, traffic management will be removed; however, a reduced speed limit will remain in place, as traffic will be travelling over a temporary surface. During full closures, amnesties at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, 12pm, 2am and 4am will allow waiting vehicles to be escorted through the site. Emergency service vehicles will be allowed to pass through the site throughout the working period.

Access to properties and junctions within the closure will be maintained with the provided amnesty times. Egress from properties and junctions within the closure will be maintained under escort whenever safe to allow.  Works will be planned in stages to minimise the impacted areas.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Steve Taylor, BEAR Scotland’s North West Design Manager, said: “This resurfacing on the A87 will fix existing defects in the road surface and improve road markings, greatly improving the quality and safety for road users.

“Our teams will carry out these works quickly, with safety as our top priority. We thank the local community and road users for their patience while we complete the improvements.”
