ROAD IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE A83 NEAR CLACHAN

July 21, 2023

·
  • Road improvements to be completed by 5am on Friday 1 September.

  • Overnight road closure 7.30pm to 5am.

On behalf of Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland have been carrying out road surface improvements worth £1.2m on two sections of the A83 close to the village of Clachan in Kintyre this month.

The works were originally scheduled to take place over 19 nights from Sunday 30 July between 7:30pm and 5am each night, completed by 5am on Friday 25 August. The second phase of the project will now require an additional four nights to complete all the works. (No Friday, Saturday or Sunday night working.)

The first phase between Ronachan and Ballochroy, 3km south of Clachan has now been completed. The second phase immediately north of Clachan will continue with works on Monday 28 August from 7.30pm and will now be complete by 5am on Friday 1 September.

For the safety of road workers and motorists, these sections of the A83 will be closed in both directions on each work night. Safe access through the site will be provided during short amnesty periods at 8.30pm, 9:30pm, 10:30pm, 11:30pm, 2am and 4am. Motorists are encouraged to plan their journey and where possible arrive prior to amnesty periods to ensure they can be accommodated.

The road will be open between 5am and 7.30pm each work day, with a 30mph speed limit as traffic will be running over a temporary surface. Access through the work site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “Replacing the old worn-out road surface near Clachan will help address defects and greatly improve the road surface for drivers. The road closure is essential for safety reasons and we have taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight, at a later start time of 7:30pm.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can. We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete this essential road improvement project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information as dates may change due to weather.”
