BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are set to carry out works to repair and enhance the Tummel retaining wall and embankment on the A9 northbound off-slip to Pitlochry (south junction) from Monday 1 June 2026.
Works will be carried out between the hours of 8am and 6pm and are expected to last for approximately seven months, until 31 December 2026, subject to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
To ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the travelling public, the northbound off-slip road to Pitlochry (south junction) will be closed 24 hours a day for the duration of the works. The southbound on-slip will remain fully operational.
A diversion route suitable for trunk road traffic will be signposted from the A9 northbound to Pitlochry via the A924 (junction north of Pitlochry), adding an estimated 2 miles or 5 minutes to journey time.
Some vegetation clearance will be carried out in preparation for the project and further details will be shared once confirmed.
Consultation is taking place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.
Richard Cook, BEAR Scotland’s Bridges Manager said: “This retaining wall project is key to ensuring the structural integrity and resilience of this slip road and extending its service life for years to come and safeguarding against riverbank erosion during future extreme weather events.
“The works involve the installation of large circular steel piles that will be embedded into the riverbank to form a new section of retaining wall where the banking has previously been eroded by high river levels. To minimise the impact of the works on the river environment, these works must be completed before the worst of the winter weather.
“The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users and the local community as far as possible, however some delays are to be expected, especially during the summer peak times. Summertime working is essential to reduce the environmental impact of this project.
“We thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding while our teams carry out these essential works”
