RESURFACING THE A68 SOUTH OF FALA

February 19, 2026

  • Overnight road closures 24 February to 6 March 2026

Overnight road closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place on the A68 south of Fala to accommodate overnight resurfacing works on weekday nights from Tuesday 24 February to Friday 6 March.

The works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface three locations between Soutra and Fala: from the B6368 Haddington junction to Juniperlea Inn; at the B6368 junction for Gilston; and south of the Soutra snow gates.

Works will take place between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00 each night.

The works on Soutra Hill will be carried out on the nights of Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 February under temporary traffic lights, with a lane closure on the southbound climbing lane.

The remainder of the works will be carried out under a full road closure, with a clearly signed diversion route in place in both directions between the A68 south of Pathhead and Ravenswood Roundabout, via the B6458, B6367 and A7 through Galashiels and the A6091. This diversion will add approximately 14 minutes and 5.6 miles onto affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “Unfortunately, due to the road layout and volume of traffic through this section of the A68 we have no option but to close the road to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the public travelling on this route.

“We’ve scheduled the works at night to minimise disruption however if you do need to travel during the works our advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversion.

“We’re grateful to road users and local communities for their patience and understanding while we make these improvements.”

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
