RESURFACING THE A68 NORTH OF GATTONSIDE

April 19, 2022

  • Overnight road closures 2-6 May 2022

  • Additional night of works planned on Monday 9 May 2022

The A68 is set to benefit from an improved road surface, with six nights of resurfacing works scheduled to begin on Monday 2 May.

The works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland resurface 0.8km of carriageway, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

To ensure the safety of roadworkers and the public during these works, the A68 will be closed from north of the River Tweed to Drygrange, between 19:30 and 06:00 each night from Monday 2 May to Friday 6 May. An additional night of work will also be carried out on Monday 9 May.

On Thursday 5 May, the works will begin at the later time of 22:30, to allow local residents to travel to vote in the council elections.

A signed diversion route will be in place between Earlston and St Boswells via the A6105, A6089 and A699.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Emergency services and other relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A68 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during the works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding.”
