PUFFIN CROSSING – A9 ROSSLYN STREET, BRORA

May 27, 2026

Improving pedestrian safety in Brora

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is proposing the installation of a new controlled “Puffin” pedestrian crossing on the A9 at Rosslyn Street in Brora to improve safety and accessibility for all road users.

This new crossing forms part of our commitment to make our trunk road network safer and more inclusive for pedestrians and those with mobility needs.

Why a new crossing is needed

A series of traffic and pedestrian surveys undertaken in Brora highlighted  that there is a clear need for a safer and more convenient crossing point on the A9 trunk road through Brora, particularly during peak periods. It will also reinforce the existing 20mph speed limit within the village.

Following careful review, the proposed location has been selected due to its close proximity to key locations, including local shops, which experience consistent pedestrian activity throughout the day.

What the project involves

Alongside the installation of the new controlled crossing, improvement works will include:

  • Upgraded footways, including dropped kerbs and tactile paving
  • Carriageway resurfacing to improve skid resistance
  • New and refreshed road markings
  • Improvements to the northbound bus stop near Harry Gow’s
  • Upgrades to ironwork within the carriageway

Together, these measures will help create a safer and more user-friendly environment for both pedestrians and road users.
