BEAR Scotland is set to continue its ambitious programme of improvements across the trunk road network in South East Scotland during the second quarter of 2026.
A major programme of works on the M80 is under way, co-ordinated to make maximum use of carriageway closures to carry out a variety of improvements. A project to replace an overhead sign gantry north of M80 Junction 7 began in April and will continue through May. This will be followed in June and July by deck refurbishment works on Banknock Bridge, which carries the M80 over Station Road in the same vicinity. Some of the same closures have been used to resurface the carriageway on the M80 southbound at Junction 9, and the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway near Denny.
On the M8, a major project to refurbish a bridge carrying the motorway over the River Almond near Whitburn is taking place during May, with weekend contraflows scheduled during the weekends of 8-10 and 15-18 May.
Bridge refurbishment works on Masterton Viaduct at M90 Junction 2 are set to continue into June, including concrete repairs and parapet replacement.
Elsewhere on the network, overnight resurfacing is scheduled at various locations on the A1, A68 and A702.
Our annual programme of cyclic maintenance works is under way, with phased overnight closures scheduled on the A720, A1, A876 and M876. These closures are used to carry out a variety of routine maintenance tasks, including litter picking, grass cutting, gully emptying, catchpit cleaning, weed spraying, road sweeping and pothole patching, as well as inspections of structures and the carriageway.
Drainage investigation works are taking place on the A1 from Houndwood to Burnmouth, in preparation for a ten-kilometre improvement scheme to be carried out later in the year, and on the M90 between Junctions 1A and 2 to identify and target surface water flooding. Construction works are under way on the M9 to resolve ponding issues at Junction 4.
Rock slope works are planned on various routes including the A1, A7, A702 and A720, clearing back vegetation to expose unstable rock and remove loose material.
Delivery of a wind management scheme continues on the A1, with the installation of new hardstandings, safety barriers, signage and windsocks at four locations between Torness and Lamberton.
Full details of traffic management for any schemes involving closures or diversions is published in the News section of the BEAR Scotland website in advance of works commencing.
