Project set to begin on Monday 26 April for two weeks

  • Overnight road closure in place for safety, 9pm – 6am

  • Signed diversion via A82, A87 & A887

A surfacing project on the A82 between Fort Augustus and Invermoriston is set to begin next week.

The project will see road defects addressed on two sections of the A82 next to Loch Ness, creating a smoother and safer journey for road users.

Overnight works are set to begin on Monday 26 April and will take two weeks to complete. The project will take place between 9pm and 6am each night with surfacing due to be completed by 6am Monday 10 May, subject to weather conditions. No works will take place on Friday or Saturday nights.

Due to the narrow road widths throughout this location, the A82 will be closed in both directions during working hours to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists. A signed diversion route will be available via the A82, A87 and A887, which will add 15 miles to journeys between A82/A87 Invergarry Junction and A82/A887 Invermoriston Junction.

The A82 will be open during the daytime with a 30mph speed limit in operation to ensure vehicles can safely pass through the works on a temporary road surface.

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in accordance with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be implemented to protect the operatives that are undertaking the works.

Commenting on the improvements, Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This surfacing project next to Loch Ness will greatly improve the quality and safety of the carriageway for road users on this section of the A82.

“The overnight closures are necessary in order to protect operatives and road users given the narrow width of the A82 at this location. We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact of the project by carrying out the work overnight and avoiding busier nights on the network.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete the project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”
