OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR FIVE LOCATIONS ON THE A87, ISLE OF SKYE

October 4, 2022

  • Project to begin on Tuesday 25 October for eight nights
  • Overnight road closures in place for safety, 8pm to 6am

The A87 on the Isle of Skye is set to benefit from an improved road surface in five locations, with work set to get underway on Tuesday 25 October.

The £400,000 project will see a total of 1.2km of A87 resurfaced, with improvements being implemented at Skulamus Bridge, Armadale Junction, Ben Lee (North of Sligachan), Sligachan to Ben Lee and Torra Michaig, to create a smoother, more durable and safer road for motorists. Worn road markings will also be renewed.

The improvements will take eight nights to complete, with works taking place between 7pm and 7am each night and finishing on the morning of Wednesday 2 November subject to weather conditions. After 7am each day traffic management will be removed, but a 30mph speed limit may remain in place, as traffic will be travelling over a temporary surface.

  • A87 Skulamus Bridge

Due to restricted road widths through this section of the A87, we have no option but to close the carriageway to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the travelling public. The A87 will therefore be closed in both directions on Tuesday 25 October from 7pm to 6am. During periods of closure, amnesties at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm,12pm, 2am and 4am will allow waiting vehicles to be escorted through the site. Emergency service vehicles will be allowed to pass through the site throughout the working period.

  • A87 Armadale Junction

On Wednesday 26 October, between 7pm and 7am, there will be a lane closure with 10mph going past the Armadale Junction. Three-way temporary traffic lights will also be used to control traffic in all directions.

  • A87 Torra Michaig

On Thursday 27 October, due to restricted road widths through this section of the A87, we have no option but to close the carriageway to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the travelling public. The A87 will therefore be closed in both directions on Thursday 27 October from 7pm to 6am. During periods of closure, amnesties at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm,12pm, 2am and 4am will allow waiting vehicles to be escorted through the site. Emergency service vehicles will be allowed to pass through the site throughout the working period.

  • A87 Ben Lee (North of Sligachan)

On Friday 28th October, there will be a lane closure with 10mph going past Ben Lee. Two-way temporary traffic lights will also be used to control traffic in both directions.

  • A87 Sligachan to Ben Lee

For three nights from Monday 31 October to Wednesday 2 November, due to restricted road widths through this section of the A87, we have no option but to close the carriageway to ensure the safety of the workforce and members of the travelling public. The A87 will therefore be closed in both directions on Monday 31 October until Wednesday 2 November from 7pm to 6am. During periods of closure, amnesties at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm,12pm, 2am and 4am will allow waiting vehicles to be escorted through the site. Emergency service vehicles will be allowed to pass through the site throughout the working period.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said “These essential resurfacing works will upgrade the existing road surface, greatly improving the quality and safety for road users.”

“We thank motorists for their patience ahead of these road improvements.”
