BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out overnight resurfacing on the A1 from Cedar Café to Grantshouse.
Set to improve surface conditions for all road users, these works are planned to start on the night of Thursday 12 February from 19:30.
To protect the workforce and the travelling public, the following traffic management measures will be in place:
Phase 1: Overnight road closures
On Thursday 12 and Friday 13 February, the A1 will be closed in both directions overnight between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00.
During the closures, signed diversion routes will be in operation:
Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on the northbound diversion across Bridge Street in Coldingham, during working hours.
Phase 2: Convoy traffic management
From Monday 16 to Friday 20 February and on Monday 23 February, the A1 will remain open overnight with a 10mph convoy system in place while resurfacing works continue. The convoy system will not be in operation outside of working hours.
No works will take place on Saturday or Sunday nights.
Temporary traffic lights may remain in place depending on site conditions.
Access for emergency services and local residents will be maintained at all times.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the driving experience for motorists.
“It is essential for everyone’s safety that we close the road overnight during Phase 1 of the works. During Phase 2 of the works we can manage to keep the A1 overnight using a convoy traffic management system.
“We thank road users and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding and we’ll be working hard to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”
Live traffic information is available from the Traffic Scotland website www.traffic.gov.scot and on X at @trafficscotland.
All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
Consultation has taken place with residents, community councils and representatives in advance of the works to inform the selection of diversion routes and minimise disruption.
