Updated on Wednesday 11 March 2026: Due to poor weather forecast for the rest of this week, works on the A9 south of Tain will now start on Sunday 15 March. Additionally there will now be temporary traffic lights in place during the day for eight days. Please see new information below.
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be carrying out essential surface improvements on A9 South of Tain for 14 nights.
Works are set to take place each night between 8pm and 6am from the evening of Sunday 15 March until the morning of Friday 3 April, subject to weather conditions. No works will take place on Friday or Saturday nights.
To protect roadworkers and motorists there will be a lane closure with a 10mph convoy in place each night. Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the day from Monday 16 March to Thursday 23 March with the exception of Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March. The A9 will be open outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum, with a speed restriction of 30mph in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.
Steven Taylor, BEAR Scotland’s North West Planned Maintenance Manager said: “This resurfacing project on the A9 will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for motorists.
“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works efficiently, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these works.
“We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
Real time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland on www.trafficscotland.org, twitter at @trafficscotland or the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.
Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.
