BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is set to carry out essential resurfacing works on the A702 at Flotterstone, from Tuesday 15 September 2026.
The works will involve resurfacing a 1.1km section of the A702, addressing defects in the existing surface and creating a safer and smoother journey for road users.
Works will take place between the hours of 20:00 and 06:30 each night and are scheduled to be completed by 06:30 on Friday 2 October 2026.
To ensure the safety of all road users, the A702 will be closed during operational hours between the A766 junction and Easter Howgate.
A signed diversion route will be in place. Northbound traffic will be diverted from the A766 junction via Carlops Road and the A701 Edinburgh Road through Penicuik to the Gowkley Moss Roundabout, before taking the first exit onto Bush Loan Road and rejoining the A702. Southbound traffic should follow the same diversion in reverse. This diversion will add approximately 1.8 miles and 10 minutes to journeys during this time.
Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times and local access will be permitted when it is safe to do so.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place during daytime hours on weekdays only, to allow the new road surface to cool.
Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

“The road closure is essential for the safety of our workforce and those using the route while resurfacing takes place. The works will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption as far as possible.
“We thank road users and the local community for their patience and understanding while our teams complete these improvements.”
All works are weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
