MEDIA UPDATE: OVERNIGHT ESSENTIAL SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED ON SKYE AT A87 SLIGACHAN JUNCTION

July 4, 2022

ADDITIONAL OVERNIGHT WORKS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS ON THE A87 AT SLIGACHAN JUNCTION

Please be advised that due to adverse weather, an additional night of work is required to complete the surfacing improvements planned for the A87 at Sligachan Junction on the Isle of Skye.

The project started on Friday 8 July and was expected to be complete by Tuesday 12 July; however, an additional night of works is required on Tuesday 12 July between 8pm and 6am.  All works are expected to be complete by 6am Wednesday 13 July, subject to weather conditions.

Traffic management will remain as originally programmed; a 10mph convoy system with lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be implemented during working hours.

The A87 will be open in both directions outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum; however, a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

All relevant stakeholders have been informed of the changes.

Essential surfacing improvements to the A87 at Sligachan Junction on the Isle of Skye are now set to take place on the nights of Friday 8 July and Monday 11 July 2022.

The works, originally planned for 7 and 8 July, have been re-scheduled for operational reasons and will see 320 metres of A87 resurfaced to create a smoother and safer road for motorists.

Works will take place between 8pm and 6am each night, with surfacing due to be completed by 6am on Tuesday 12 July. No work will take place over the weekend.

For the safety of roadworkers and road users, a 10mph convoy system with lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be implemented during working hours.

The A87 will be open in both directions out with working hours to keep disruption to a minimum; however, a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “This surfacing project on the A87 on Skye will help address defects and greatly improve the road surface for motorists.

“To minimise delays, we’ve planned for the works to take place during night-time hours.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can. We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these projects.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website www.trafficscotland.org for live travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
