OLD MILITARY ROAD MAINTAINS A83 ACCESS TO ARGYLL

December 12, 2025

  • Road users should be prepared to use the Old Military Road from afternoon on Saturday 13 December

Due to heavy rainfall forecast for the weekend, BEAR Scotland intend to use the Old Military Road as a precaution, allowing road users travelling along the A83 Rest and Be Thankful to continue their journeys safely.

However, due to current uncertainty in the weather forecast, a final decision regarding the time for opening of the Old Military Road will be decided the morning of Saturday 13 December. This approach is being taken to minimise disruption to the A83 corridor, but road users should be mindful that the local diversion route may be implemented as early as mid-afternoon on Saturday and remain in use throughout Sunday.

A decision will be made about returning traffic to the A83 trunk road on Monday 15 December following safety inspections of the A83 and the hillside.

Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “The safety of road users is our highest priority and we closely monitor conditions at the Rest and Be Thankful on a daily basis.

“With the forecast for heavy rainfall over the weekend, saturation levels on the hillside are expected to increase, and we have therefore placed the Old Military Road in a state of readiness.  Use of the short local diversion maintains access to the  A83 corridor for the travelling public, keeping Argyll very much open for business with minimal delays.

“Subject to the weather improving, we plan to carry out geotechnical inspections on Monday which will inform a decision to return traffic to the A83.”
