OCTOBER UPDATE ON MAJOR WORKS ON THE A835 AT LOCH GARVE

November 2, 2026

  • Works have restarted to construct a new retaining wall

  • Programme is being reviewed, but works may continue until Summer 2027

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, has recommenced works to construct the retaining wall and install new safety barriers on the A835 at Loch Garve, approximately one mile south of Garve.

The existing retaining wall at the site was damaged by a vehicle and requires replacement to ensure the road continues to operate safely. Since the incident occurred, temporary safety barriers and traffic signals have been in place to protect road users and road workers.

Works were paused in July 2026 after it was discovered that further remedial measures were required to address drainage issues on the slope between the A835 and the railway. BEAR Scotland has worked with Network Rail to resolve the issues identified, and works recommenced in late October 2026.

Due to the delays experienced and the complexity of the works, the current end date is expected to be Summer 2027. However, the programme is under review, and further clarification of the projected project end date will be issued in due course.

Richard Cook, BEAR Scotland’s North West Bridges Manager, said: “Replacement of the retaining wall on the A835 at Loch Garve will provide structural stability to the road and associated safety barrier, ensuring the long-term safety and integrity of the adjacent trunk road and railway line.

“We’re working in conjunction with Network Rail and Openreach, and safety is our top priority. We thank the local community and road users for their ongoing patience while we seek to progress these complex works over the coming months.”
