NORTH EAST ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

March 28, 2022

Since the start of this year approximately £21M has been invested by Transport Scotland, allowing for smoother and safer journeys for motorists across routes in the North East.

Resurfacing projects were completed across a variety of routes on the network including the A92, A96, A95, A9 and M90.

£1.2M worth of surfacing improvements across two sections of the A90 and two sections of the M90 at Barnhill in Perth was recently completed. The project took place in phases across four weeks to help minimise disruption to road users. The investment will ensure that these busy sections of the network remain at the highest of standards.

A road safety project on the A92 at Chapel Interchange, Kirkcaldy got underway in March which involves team upgrading road markings on the westbound on-slip connecting to the A92. The project will provide safer access for motorists joining the trunk road. The scheme is part of BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland’s continued commitment to road safety.

Various landscape improvements were carried out across the network including £80,000 worth of landscaping works on the A92 between Bankhead Roundabout and Redhouse Roundabout in Fife. The works involved cutting overgrown scrub and vegetation as well as thinning the existing treeline to promote healthier growth of the remaining trees on the southbound verge.  A number of trees were also be felled for the safety of trunk road users and local residents.

Overnight essential maintenance was completed on the A90 Glaslaw Interchange near Stonehaven. The maintenance involved the replacement of sections of the expansion joint of the bridge, ensuing the continued safe operation of the structure.

Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Representative, said: “The recent months have seen challenges in terms of adverse weather conditions. Our teams rely on drier weather for resurfacing works, so inclement impacts our programmes.

“Despite these challenges, it has been a successful start to the year, and we are proud of what our teams have achieved. We want to thank the local communities and motorists for their continued patience while our teams worked to complete the programme of repairs and improvements throughout the year.”
