NEXT PHASE OF BRIDGE WORKS TO TAKE PLACE ON M9 BETWEEN JUNCTIONS 3 AND 4

August 19, 2025

  • Overnight road closure in place for Wednesday 3 September

On behalf of Transport Scotland, operating company BEAR Scotland will be carrying out the next phase of essential bridge refurbishment works on the M9 near Linlithgow.

Road users are advised that the M9 will be closed overnight in both directions between junctions 3 and 4 on Wednesday 3 September between the hours of 19:30 and 06:00. The closure has been planned to cause minimal impact to road users and to ensure the safety of those carrying out the work.

For those travelling Eastbound, a signed diversion will be in place via Bo’ness and the A904, adding around 10 minutes to journey times and an additional 1.5 miles. Traffic will be directed to leave the M9 at Junction 5 and follow the diversion before rejoining at Junction 3. For those travelling Westbound, a signed diversion will also be in place, directing traffic to leave the M9 at Junction 1a and rejoin it at Junction 5. This diversion will add around 18 minutes to journey times at a distance of 5 miles.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “This programme of refurbishment is key to ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge and extend its service life for many years to come.

“The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users as far as possible. However, some delays during peak hours are to be expected and we would encourage road users to check their journey times in advance of travel.

“We thank road users for their patience and understanding while our teams carry out these essential works and would ask them to fully comply with temporary speed limits whilst they are in place to ensure our workers can carry out their work safely.”

Live traffic information is available from the Traffic Scotland website www.traffic.gov.scot and on X at @trafficscotland.

All works are dependent on the weather and the existing condition of the structure, which will be better understood once works commence. As such, the programme of works is subject to postponement, cancellation or rescheduling.  Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.
