MAJOR WORKS TO BEGIN ON BRIDGE OVER M8 BETWEEN BATHGATE AND BLACKBURN

May 13, 2025

  • Four months of traffic restrictions commences 18 May 2025

  • Expect delays

A major project to refurbish the bridge carrying the B792 local road over the M8 motorway between Bathgate and Blackburn is set to begin on the night of 18 May and continue for approximately four months.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland is advising motorists to plan ahead and expect delays.

The M8 will be fully closed in both directions between Junctions 3A and 4 from 20:30 until 06:00 on the night of Sunday 18 May.  A diversion route for westbound traffic will be signposted via the A779, A7066 and the A801, with eastbound traffic directed to use the same route in reverse. This will add an estimated 1.1 miles and 5 minutes to affected journeys.

On Monday 19 May there will be various lane closures in both directions between Junctions 3A and 4 to allow the contraflow traffic management to be installed.

From 06:00 on Tuesday 20 May there will be a contraflow in place between Junctions 3A and 4 with a 40mph speed restriction.  The contraflow will be in place for approximately four months; however two lanes will remain open in each direction.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East unit Bridges Manager, said: “This bridge over the M8 is in need of refurbishment to ensure it can continue to provide safe and reliable service for decades to come.

“Planned works include steelwork repairs to damaged beams, concrete repairs, installation of cathodic protection to increase the longevity of concrete elements, and repainting of all existing steelwork.

“We thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding during these essential works.”

Consultation has been carried out with relevant stakeholders including West Lothian Council and emergency services to make them aware of the plans in advance.
