MAINTENANCE WORKS ON A6091 GALAFOOT BRIDGE

March 12, 2026

  • Local access restrictions for three weeks from 23 March 2026

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be carrying out maintenance works on the underside of Galafoot Bridge, for approximately three weeks commencing 23 March.

Galafoot Bridge carries the A6091 trunk road over the River Tweed south of Galashiels. Planned works include cleaning inside the structure and bird-proofing.

Access restrictions will be in place during the works, for the safety of workers and members of the public:

  • On the A6091 over the bridge, there will be a single lane closure for approximately one week from 23 March
  • The car park beneath the bridge on the west side of the River Tweed will be partially closed for three weeks, with access for the public only available via the north entrance from Boleside Road
  • Boleside Road will remain open beneath Galafoot Bridge, however there may be short periods when works are taking place directly overhead, during which temporary stop/go traffic management will be in place to ensure public safety
  • The Black Path steps beneath Galafoot Bridge will be closed for approximately three weeks. The Black Path will remain open north of the bridge, however on the south side pedestrians will be diverted via the A6091 towards Tweedbank Roundabout, from where they can follow the Abbotsford link to rejoin the Black Path.
  • The two bus stops located on the east side of the A6091 at Galafoot Bridge will be closed from 23 March for approximately one week. Pedestrians will be diverted to use the Tweedbank Loch bus stops as an alternative.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East unit Bridges Manager, said: “We’re grateful to local people for their patience and understanding while we carry out these maintenance works. We’ll do all we can to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible and keep disruption to a minimum.”

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of these traffic management arrangements.
