M9 CANAL BRIDGE WORKS BETWEEN JUNCTIONS 6 AND 7

December 18, 2025

  • Fast lane closures in both directions 19 January to 19 February 2026

  • Overnight northbound carriageway closures 2, 3 and 4 February 2026

Works to repair the bridge carrying the M9 motorway over the Forth & Clyde Canal next to the Kelpies are set to begin on 19 January.

For the safety of the public and the workforce during these works, daytime lane closures and overnight carriageway closures will be required:

  • The fast lanes on the M9 between Junctions 6 and 7 will be closed in both directions from 19 January until 19 February. This is expected to result in traffic delays of over 15 minutes during peak times.
  • The northbound carriageway of the M9 will be fully closed between Junctions 5 (Cadgers Brae) and 7 (Kinnaird House) from 20:00 until 06:00 on the nights of Monday 2, Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 February. During these overnight closures, a signed diversion route will be in place from M9 Junction 5 via the A9, Ronades Road, B902 Carron Road, A88 Bellsdyke Road, A905 and M876. This diversion will add approximately 6 miles and 17 minutes to affected journeys.
  • The walkway under the bridge on the north side of the canal will also be closed from 12 to 19 February.

These works are being coordinated with joint replacement works on the nearby bridge carrying the M9 over the River Carron. For details of this scheme see https://www.bearscot.com/m9-carron-bridge-joint-replacement-works/

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of these traffic management arrangements.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East unit Bridges Manager, said: “This bridge on the M9 is being repaired to ensure it can continue to provide safe and reliable service.

“We appreciate that daytime lane closures will result in delays, however these are essential for safety.

“We’ll carry out works requiring full carriageway closures at night to minimise disruption.

“If you need to travel on the M9 during this period, please plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversion.

“We thank road users for their patience and understanding.”
