M8 LONGACRE BRIDGE BARRIER AND PARAPET WORKS

August 12, 2021

  • Four weeks of traffic restrictions begin Sunday 15 August 2021

An essential project to upgrade bridge parapet and safety barriers on the M8 between Junctions 5 and 6 is set to begin on Sunday 15 August.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the works over four weeks, with the project planned for completion by the morning of Friday 12 September.

For the safety of road workers and the travelling public, the following traffic restrictions will be required on the M8 between Junctions 5 and 6:

  • 24-hour hard shoulder closure
  • 50mph speed restriction through the works
  • Overnight lane closures – one lane in each direction will be closed from 20:30 until 06:00 each night.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The existing barrier and parapet system of the Longacre bridge on the M8 east of Junction 6 does not meet current standards. An upgrade is required to ensure that they could withstand a potential impact from a heavy vehicle.

“Speed restrictions and hard shoulder closures are essential for the safety of road workers and motorists.  We have planned all works that require lane closures to take place during night-time hours to minimise disruption.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience and encourage them to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journey and check the Traffic Scotland website and Twitter account for live travel information.”
