KINCARDINE BRIDGE DECK REFURBISHMENT – PROGRAMME EXTENDED

November 6, 2026

  • Traffic lights, lane and footway closures to continue until late January 2027

  • Occasional overnight bridge closures

An ongoing project to refurbish a section of the A985 Kincardine Bridge deck will continue until late January, following delays due to the condition of the bridge and adverse weather.

Work has been ongoing on a 150-metre section of the bridge deck south of the central swing span since September. The project involves repairs to the bridge deck, renewal of waterproofing, surfacing, road markings and road studs, as well as improvements to drainage and vehicle safety barriers.

Temporary traffic signals, lane closures, and footway closures on one side of the bridge are expected to continue until late January.

Additional full overnight bridge closures are planned for the following dates:

  • Monday 9 November, 19:30-06:00
  • Tuesday 10 November, 19:30-06:00
  • Friday 13 November, 20:00-06:00
  • Wednesday 18 November, 19:30-06:00
  • Thursday 19 November, 19:30-06:00
  • Wednesday 20 January, 19:30-06:00
  • Thursday 21 January, 19:30-06:00

During these closures, a diversion route suitable for trunk road traffic will be signposted between Higgins’ Neuk Roundabout and Longannet Roundabout, where the A985 meets the A977.  This diversion crosses the River Forth via the A876 Clackmannanshire Bridge and the A977 Toll Road, adding an estimated 3.8 miles and 6 minutes to affected journeys.

Consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The programme of works on Kincardine Bridge has been extended due to the bridge deck being in worse condition than originally anticipated, and weather-related delays.

“The remainder of the works will also be weather dependent, however we’ll publicise any further changes to the programme if required.

“We thank road users and the local community for their continuing patience and understanding.”

All works are dependent on the weather and the existing condition of the structure, which can’t be fully understood until works commence and intrusive investigations are carried out. As such, the programme of works is subject to postponement, cancellation or rearrangement of dates in the event of adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
