Even in the most challenging conditions, progress didn’t stop. Our teams worked hard throughout October, November and December to deliver a range of improvements across the North West trunk road network.
With an investment of almost £24m from Transport Scotland, we successfully carried out a range of projects including safety barrier replacements, signage improvements, bridge deck refurbishment, and more!
Here are some of our key highlights from the last quarter:

A range of safety improvements were delivered across the network, including significant safety barrier upgrades were completed including on the A83 at Clachan, the A9 at Drumochter and the A828 at Sutherland’s Grove.
A new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing on the A84 at Dobbie’s Garden Centre in Stirling was completed, featuring a refuge island, dropped kerbs and tactile paving, along with refreshed road markings and studs.
And it’s not just the safety of road users and pedestrians we’re improving… we’ve installed new warning signs on the A86 at Laggan to highlight the risk of feral goats!

Bridge deck refurbishment on the A835 at Inchbae Bridge was completed on the southbound lane in October and the northbound lane in November. Due to narrow road widths and off-centre carriageway geometry across the bridge, the carriageway was temporarily widened on approaches to the bridge, ensuring that the road could remain open throughout the works, thereby reducing disruption to road users.
The colder months always bring additional challenges for our Planned Maintenance Team with cooler temperatures, increased rain and a series of weather warnings impacting our programmes. Perseverance has helped to create smoother journeys on trunk roads like the A82 and A83 and despite the wintry weather, the period saw almost 3km of road resurfaced on the A82 and defects fixed on a further 4.2km of road on the A83.

Good progress has been made on the lighting refurbishment project on the A82 at Achintore Road in Fort William, where existing lighting columns and the underground cabling network are being fully replaced.
Alongside this, our landscaping team has been improving visibility across the trunk road network by cutting back overgrown vegetation and clearing lines of sight to ensure road signs remain easy to see.
We also invested £31,000 between October and November in road signs, helping road users navigate more safely and confidently around the North West of Scotland.

Masonry repairs to the Pass House retaining wall on the A84 were completed in November. The works involved clearing vegetation, rebuilding the parapet, raking out the masonry joints and repointing with lime mortar. Also, the cope stones were reset on top of the parapet and a defective set of steel steps at the wall’s base were removed. Similarly, repairs to Tacher Bridge on the A9 were completed in December following a vehicle collision that damaged one of the masonry parapets.
