Freezy does it – winter so far in the South East

February 2, 2026

It has been a relatively mild winter so far on the South East trunk road network.

Storm Amy arrived on 3 and 4 October, causing some issues with several trees blown down, particularly along the M9. These were swiftly removed without significant disruption to traffic.

Temperatures overall have been sightly above average, with cold spells in mid-November and mid-December.

During October, November and December, a total of seven yellow weather warnings for rain were issued, four for wind, one for snow and one for ice. One amber warning for rain was issued in December.

Up to the end of December, 4,622 tonnes of salt was used to treat South East trunk roads, and 137 tonnes of potassium acetate chemical de-icer was used on bridges.

Mike Smart, BEAR Scotland’s Severe Weather Manager for the South East, said: “South East Scotland has largely escaped the worst of the winter weather so far, however we remain ready and prepared to keep trunk roads safe and clear, whatever the rest of the season brings.”
