FOOTWAY IMPROVEMENTS – A82 GLENURQUHART ROAD, INVERNESS

October 31, 2025

Improving active travel options

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out active travel improvement works on the A82 Glenurquhart Road in Inverness, between Smith Avenue and Ballifeary Road, starting Monday 17 November 2025.

These works will improve safety and accessibility for those walking and wheeling in the area, supporting the Scottish Government’s goal of making active travel the most popular choice for everyday journeys.

What the project involves

Works will be carried out between 8am and 6pm each working day, Monday to Friday, with teams also planning to work weekend shifts where possible to complete the works sooner.

The improvement works will deliver a range of upgrades including:

  • Widening of the existing footpath in the southbound verge directly east of the A82 trunk road
  • Upgrading dropped crossing points and traffic islands
  • Installing new road markings
  • Resurfacing the footpath
  • Drainage alterations at driveways and gated accesses

These enhancements will create a safer, smoother, and more accessible route for all users along this key section of the A82.

Construction and timescales

This project will take up to 12 weeks to complete, with all works completed by Sunday 8 February, subject to weather and any other unforeseen delays.

There will be no works over the two-week festive period.

Keeping road users safe

To ensure the safety of both the workforce and road users, 24-hour lane closures supported by temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the works.

Sections of the east footpath will also be closed temporarily during construction, with alternative safe pedestrian routes and crossing facilities maintained throughout.

Residents in the area will be informed in advance of any access or parking restrictions that may apply.

Advice for residents

During the works, residents may wish to keep windows and doors closed to minimise the impact of dust and noise from construction activity.

Cones will be used to mark areas where parking is restricted and we ask that residents find alternative parking during these times.
