ESSENTIAL SURFACING IMROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR A99 AT LYBSTER

July 5, 2022

Project to begin on Wednesday 6 July for two days and six nights

  • Daytime convoy to be operated on 6 and 7 July, 7am to 7pm
  • Overnight road closures to be implemented 10 to 18 July, 8pm to 6am
  • No works to be undertaken on Friday or Saturday nights.

Essential surfacing improvements on the A99 at Lybster are set to get underway from 7am on Wednesday 6 July.

The project will see around 650 metres of the A99 at Lybster resurfaced, creating a smoother and safer road for motorists.

Due to the narrow widths of the carriageway on the A99 at Lybster, and to ensure the safety of roadworkers as well as motorists, the project will take place in two phases with all works expected to be complete by 6am on Monday 18 July subject to weather conditions.

The works will take place as follows:

  • Phase one – Wednesday 6 – Thursday 7 July, 7am – 7pm (two days) – A 10mph convoy system utilising temporary traffic lights will be in place during working hours. Traffic management will be removed outwith working hours.

  • Phase two Sunday 10 July – Monday 18 July, 7pm – 6am (six nights, excluding Friday and Saturday nights) – From 7pm to 8pm each night, a 10mph convoy system will be in place prior to the road closure. Then from 8pm until 6am each night, a full road closure will be in place. Traffic will be diverted via the A9/A882. The A99 will be open outwith working hours; however, a 30mph speed limit will be in place as vehicles will be running on a temporary surface. No works will take place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This surfacing project on the A99 will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for road users.

“We will be utilising a combination of daytime convoy operations and night-time road closures to progress the works as quickly and safely as we can noting the narrow road widths present at the location.   We will not be undertaking any works on the Friday or Saturday night to minimise the disruption experienced at the weekend.

“We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete this project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”

Real time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland on www.trafficscotland.org, twitter at @trafficscotland or the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.
