ESSENTIAL SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED ON THE A9 AT PORTGOWER

June 11, 2025

  • Works to begin on Sunday 29 June for ten nights

  • Road closures with amnesties

BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be carrying out resurfacing works on the A9 at Portgower, North of Helmsdale.

The improvement works will involve resurfacing the road to make it more durable and resilient against inclement weather, as well as providing a smoother and safer road for road users.

Works will take place over ten nights from 7pm on Sunday 29 June and all works will be completed by the morning of Friday 11 July at 6am.

To ensure the safety of our workforce and members of the public, which is of paramount importance, the A9 will be closed between 7pm and 6am each night, with amnesty periods at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, midnight, 2am and 4am where works will be halted and traffic led through the site.

No works will be carried out on Friday or Saturday nights and all traffic management will be removed outwith working hours.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders and access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “These maintenance works on the A9 at Portgower will help address defects and greatly improve the surface for road users. The overnight closures are essential to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists.

“We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete this project. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”

Real time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland on www.traffic.gov.scot, twitter at @trafficscotland or the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.
