UPDATE on 17 September 2025: Due to the scale of the works on the A9 Strathsteven Bridge requires an additional three weeks of work to complete the construction. All new information below.
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are set to carry out essential maintenance work on the A9 Strathsteven Bridge, located approximately 2 miles northeast of Golspie, from 11 August.
This essential maintenance work was originally scheduled to commence in May, but an occupied Tawny Owl nest found on the structure through pre-start ecology surveys led to much of the planned work being postponed. This decision was taken so that no disturbance or damage was caused to the nest while it was in use and to comply with legal requirements (Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981).
This essential maintenance work was originally scheduled to commence on Monday 11 August for five weeks. However, a larger than anticipated volume of concrete repair works as well as railway-related delays outwith the control of BEAR Scotland will mean an additional three weeks of work.
The planned works involve structural investigation, repairs to defective concrete, replacing the bridge deck expansion joints and resurfacing the road.
This essential maintenance work is started on Monday 11 August and is expected to be completed by Sunday 5 October. Works will generally be carried out at night between 9pm and 7am.
To protect both road users and the workforce, this single carriageway section of the A9 will be reduced to one lane over the bridge. Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day until Monday 29 September. For some overnight works, a convoy traffic management system will be required to safely escort road users through the site. During the last week of the work there will be no traffic management on the road.
Euan Scott, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said, “These works are being carried out to maintain Strathsteven Bridge and allow future more extensive repairs to be avoided in later years.”
“We will do everything possible to complete this essential maintenance as quickly and safely as possible. We thank all road users and the local community for their patience in advance.
“Please plan ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date journey information and leave some extra time to complete journeys.”
