ENHANCING PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLE ACCESS ON THE A7 IN HAWICK

April 10, 2024

  • Controlled pedestrian crossing upgrade at Commercial Road

  • Temporary traffic lights from Monday 6 May

Works to improve pedestrian and cycle access on the A7 Commercial Road in Hawick are due to commence on Monday 6 May for four weeks.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the upgrading of an existing pedestrian crossing to a Toucan crossing suitable for use by both pedestrians and cyclists.

During the initial civil engineering works, Commercial Road will be restricted to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Further works will be required to apply new road markings on the approaches to the crossing. These works will take place overnight and require a full closure. Details of the dates and diversion route will be communicated once they have been confirmed.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These works will improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the A7 in Hawick.

“A lane closure with temporary traffic lights is required for the safety of road users and our workforce, however the route will remain open and we don’t expect this to cause significant delays.

“We will return at a future date to complete the road markings for the upgraded crossing and will share details of these additional works as soon as timings are confirmed.”
