DRAINAGE WORKS ON A1 SOUTHBOUND, WALLYFORD TO ABBOTSVIEW

  • Overnight slip road and lane closures commence 30 June 2025

A series of overnight slip road and lane closures is planned on the A1 southbound while BEAR Scotland conducts drainage investigations on the trunk road between Wallyford Junction and Abbotsview Junction.

The works will be carried out in seven phases, commencing on Monday 30 June and continuing for six weeks.

For the safety of workers and road users, the following closures will be in place between 19:30 and 06:00 on Mondays to Friday nights only:

30 June to 4 July:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Wallyford Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Dolphingstone Junction, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Wallyford Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 3.8 miles and 4 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Wallyford Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Old Craighall Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 3.5 miles and 4 minutes to journeys.
  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Wallyford Junction and Dolphingstone Junction.

7 July to 11 July:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Dolphingstone Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Bankton Junction, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Dolphingstone Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 3.1 miles and 4 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Dolphingstone Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Wallyford Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 3.7 miles and 4 minutes to journeys.
  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Dolphingstone Junction and Bankton Junction.

14 July to 18 July:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Bankton Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Gladsmuir Junction, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Bankton Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 6 miles and 6 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Bankton Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Dolphingstone Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 3.2 miles and 4 minutes to journeys.
  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Bankton Junction and Gladsmuir Junction.

21 July to 25 July:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Gladsmuir Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Oaktree Junction, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Gladsmuir Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 5.1 miles and 5 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Gladsmuir Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Bankton Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 6.4 miles and 7 minutes to journeys.
  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Gladsmuir Junction and Oaktree Junction.

28 July to 1 August:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Oaktree Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Abbotsview Junction, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Oaktree Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 4.3 miles and 6 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Oaktree Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Gladsmuir Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 5.1 miles and 5 minutes to journeys.
  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Oaktree Junction and Abbotsview Junction.

4 August to 5 August:

  • A southbound lane closure will be in place between Oaktree Junction and Abbotsview Junction.

6 August to 8 August:

  • The slip roads joining and exiting the A1 southbound at Abbotsview Junction will both be closed.
  • Traffic wishing to exit the A1 southbound will be diverted via the A1 southbound to turn at Thistly Cross Roundabout, before returning on the A1 to exit via the Abbotsview Junction northbound off-slip. This will add approximately 17.1 miles and 16 minutes to journeys.
  • Traffic wishing to join the A1 southbound at Abbotsview Junction will be diverted via the A1 northbound to turn at Oaktree Junction and return on the A1 southbound. This will add approximately 4.3 miles and 5 minutes to journeys.
  • A lane closure will be in place between the Abbotsview Junction southbound off-slip and on-slip.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These drainage investigations will clean and survey drainage assets on this section of the A1, helping to improve the performance of the pipework, reduce the risk of flooding and inform of any repairs that will be required during the next phase of improvement works.
