• Overnight carriageway closures 15-27 September and 11- 27 October 2026

Works to replace joints and resurface a section of carriageway on the bridge carrying the M9 over the River Forth between Junctions 10 and 11 are set to begin on 15 September.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland will carry out the project, which requires a series of full overnight carriageway closures on the M9 northbound between Junctions 9 and 11, and southbound between Junctions 11 and 9.

Planned overnight carriageway closures:

• 15 to 21 September, 20:30 to 06:00, M9 northbound Junction 9 to 11
• 22 to 27 September, 20:30 to 06:00, M9 southbound Junction 11 to 9
• 11 to 18 October, 20:30 to 06:00, M9 northbound Junction 9 to 11
• 19 to 27 October, 20:30 to 06:00, M9 southbound Junction 11 to 9.

Northbound diversion route:

• Northbound traffic on the M9 will be directed off the M9 at Junction 9, Bannockburn Interchange, onto the A91 to Manor Powis Roundabout, then the A907 Alloa Road to Causewayhead Roundabout, followed by the A9 Airthrey Road and Henderson Street to M9 Junction 11, Keir Roundabout. This diversion will add an estimated 1.6 miles and 12 minutes to affected journeys.

Southbound diversion route:

• Traffic wishing to head south on the M9 will be directed onto the A9 from Keir Roundabout, through Bridge of Allan to Causewayhead Roundabout, taking the first exit onto the A907 Alloa Road to Manor Powis Roundabout, then the A91 to M9 Junction 9, Bannockburn Interchange. This will add an estimated 1.6 miles and 11 minutes to affected journeys.

In advance of these works, consultation has taken place with relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “This programme of maintenance is key to ensuring the structural integrity of this bridge and extend its service life for many years to come.

“The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users as far as possible, which is why they’re being done overnight, however some delays are to be expected.

“Full carriageway closures are essential for the safety of motorists and our workforce, however we’ll take advantage of these to carry out as many jobs as possible, Alongside the bridge works, our Operations team will also be on site carrying out routine cyclic maintenance.

“We thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding while our teams carry out these works.”

All works are dependent on the weather and the existing condition of the structure, which can’t be fully understood until works commence and intrusive investigations are carried out. As such, the programme of works is subject to postponement, cancellation or rearrangement of dates in the event of adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
