ACTIVE TRAVEL IMPROVEMENTS ON A83 KINLOCH ROAD, CAMPBELTOWN

February 26, 2026

  • Works to start on Monday 2 March

  • Temporary traffic lights in place for six weeks

BEAR Scotland, working on behalf of Transport Scotland, is set to carry out active travel improvements along the A83 Kinloch Road, Campbeltown.

Works will be carried out between 8am and 6pm between Monday 2 March and Friday 10 April.

These improvements will see the installation of two signal-controlled pedestrian crossings adjacent to The Royal Hotel and Aqualibrium. Further works will also be carried out to widen the existing footpaths and resurface and install new road markings on the A83 carriageway.

These measures seek to improve safety and accessibility for those walking, wheeling, and cycling in the area, fulfilling the Scottish Government’s aims of making these the most popular choice for everyday journeys.

To ensure the safety of the workforce and road users, lane closures with temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the work. However, when it is safe to do so, traffic lights will be removed outwith working hours.

Sections of the north and south footpaths will be closed during the works with alternative safe pedestrian routes maintained throughout.

Access for emergency services and scheduled bus services will be maintained for the full duration of the works.

Consultations have been carried out with relevant stakeholders to share information about the project in advance.

Gerard Kelly, BEAR Scotland’s North West Active Travel Manager said: “Active travel improvement works on the A83 are part of an ongoing commitment to improve safety, quality, and comfort for vulnerable road users.

“The traffic management is essential to keep roadworkers, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists safe during this project, however our teams will carry out these works with safety as our top priority.

“We encourage road users to plan their journey in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.  We thank the local community and road users for their patience while we complete the improvements.”
