A828 Ledaig Rockslope Stabilisation

Major rockslope stabilisation works are progressing at A828 Ledaig following a series of rockfall incidents at this location. The project began in January 2025 and is being delivered to improve long-term safety and resilience along this key route.

The works include vegetation removal, rock scaling, installation of netting to mitigate against rockfall, and targeted intervention for any unstable material.

Background

Following increasing rockfall activity and detailed inspections carried out in late 2024, areas were identified as showing significant deterioration since the previous assessment earlier in the year.

Emergency boulder removal works were undertaken in November 2024 where airbags were used to safely dislodge unstable rock which posed a risk to the carriageway below. Steel plates and a stone bund were utilised to protect the road and underground utilities.

The main rock face  stabilisation programme was subsequently brought forward in response to the rockfall events to ensure public safety and minimise future disruption.

Challenges

The main rock face works commenced in January 2025 and resulted in 4925m² of rock netting being provide and 1196 m of rock bars installed to help stabilise the natural rock.

Environmental and geological issues slowed progress on site and resulted in the requirement for additional interventions, leading to a significantly longer programme of works than originally expected.

Initially, issues with roosting birds impacted progress despite steps being taken in advance to minimise disruption to local wildlife, including the installation of bird nesting boxes and the use of sound and visual deterrents.

Furthermore, due to the complex geology at this location, developing a safe and effective solution required detailed assessment and careful planning. As our teams have gained safer access to the slope, additional areas of instability have been identified. Expanding the project scope is therefore essential to address these hazards properly and to ensure the long‑term safety and resilience of this key route.

Current status

The current phase of essential rockslope stabilisation works is expected to last for up to six months. This includes the removal of loose rock and further slope stabilisation using netting and rock anchors.

Environmental monitoring is continuing due to bird nesting activity within the works area, in line with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Subject to this monitoring, nightshift working is currently proposed to begin from Monday 15 May at 7pm. A check will be carried out each morning to confirm whether rock removal can safely proceed:

  • If nesting activity has finished, the remaining three areas of rock will be removed during nightshifts.
  • If nesting is still active, rock removal will be paused and preparatory works will take place instead.

Daytime works are continuing, including installation of rock anchors at a safe distance from the nesting area.

To facilitate this work and ensure teams can safely access the area, temporary traffic lights remain in place 24-hours a day. The road remains safe for use, and the traffic management allows us to maintain access to the slope while the design for the remaining works is completed.

Next steps

Whilst works continue on site, our teams are working on a solution to address the final area of the slope requiring rock removal and stabilisation is finalised.

Regular roadside inspections are being carried out as part of ongoing monitoring at the site.

Details will be shared through this website and with the community council as soon as they are available.

Summary

The A828 Ledaig slope has a long history of rockfall activity, and the works being undertaken are essential to ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of this important route.

While unexpected conditions have required an expansion of the project scope, these findings are typical for complex rock environments and can only be fully inspected and assessed once protection systems are in place.

We remain committed to completing the works as efficiently and safely as possible, and minimising disruption to residents, businesses, and road users.

Further information will be issued once the additional design work is complete and the programme for future activity is established.
