The project team is currently developing designs to address these newly identified areas, which will involve further rock removal and stabilisation.
Whilst a solution is finalised, works have continued on site, with tree felling and the installation of two temporary catchfences completed on the northern side of the rock face, and a new secondary duct installed within the closed lane to ensure continuity of services.
The next phase of essential rockslope stabilisation works is currently underway and is expected to last for up to six months. This includes the removal of loose rock and further slope stabilisation using netting and rock anchors.
Night-time working is required during certain safety-critical activities, with traffic stopped in both directions for short periods of up to 10 minutes to allow more extensive rock removal. This has progressed well with two large rock blocks successfully removed from the slope, a significant step forward in improving the safety of this section of the A828 trunk road.
There are currently three smaller areas of rock remaining to be removed. However, overnight works are currently paused due the identification of bird nesting activity within the overnight works area. Our environmental team are monitoring closely to ensure compliance with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Daytime works can continue as these activities can be safely carried out at a suitable distance from the nest.
To facilitate this work and ensure teams can safely access the area, temporary traffic lights remain in place. The road remains safe for use, and the traffic management allows us to maintain access to the slope while the design for the remaining works is completed.
