£140,000 OVERNIGHT SURFACING IMPROVEMENTS

A96 Elgin

Works start Thursday 11 March

Two sections of the A96 in Elgin are set to benefit from major surfacing improvements worth £140,000 with work set to get underway on  Thursday.

The improvements will address defects in the road surface at two sections on the A96 creating a safer and smoother road surface for motorists.

The overnight improvements are scheduled to start on Thursday 11 March and will take place over five nights between 7.30pm and 6.30am each night, with all works expected to be completed by 6.30am on Wednesday 17 March, subject to weather conditions. No work is programmed for Saturday night.

The project is programmed to take place as follows:

  • A96 Burger King to Pansport Roundabout – Thursday 11 March to Friday 12 March (two nights)

The first phase of the surfacing improvements will get underway on Thursday 11 March and will take two nights to complete. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, a full road closure of the eastbound and westbound carriageway between Ashgrove Road and Pansport Roundabout will be in place with signed diversion routes. Access will be maintained for local residents during working hours. All traffic management will be removed during the day.

  • A96 Tescos to Post Office Roundabout – Sunday 14 March to Tuesday 16 March (three nights)

The second phase of the surfacing improvements will begin on Sunday 14 March and will take three nights to complete. To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, a road closure on the eastbound and westbound carriageways between Dr Greys Roundabout and Northfield Roundabout will be in place with signed diversion routes. Access will be maintained for local residents during working hours. All traffic management will be removed during the day.

Consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing improvements to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance, will be in place to ensure all site personnel remain safe once the project gets underway.  New safe operation procedures and risk assessments have also been developed to ensure teams are kept safe throughout the project.

Commenting on the improvements, Ian Stewart, BEAR Scotland’s North East Representative, said: “This £140,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this section of the A96, as well as create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“For safety, the road has to be closed while we complete the work at these sections of the A96 however we’ve arranged the work to take place overnight to help minimise disruption. We’ll also ensure any noise is kept to a minimum where possible.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these essential improvements on the A96. We encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”

Real-time journey planning information can be obtained by visiting www.trafficscotland.org, twitter at @trafficscotland or via the new mobile site my.trafficscotland.org.

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled adopting Scottish Environment Project Agency (SEPA) approved construction methods and disposal of waste materials to the approved standards.
