A83 AT REST AND BE THANKFUL – ROAD RESURFACING

June 5, 2023

To coincide with the planned completion of catch pit 3B, resurfacing works are programmed on the A83 between the River Croe (Cobbler) bridge and the Lochgoilhead junction over a length of 1.8km  The resurfacing works encompass the full area of the catchpit works and also an area north of the Rest and Be Thankful in vicinity of the B828 junction and Loch Restil, an area south of Cobbler Bridge and a further section within Glen Croe. Works at the Rest and Be Thankful will also include a programme of interventions to improve roadside drainage. By accelerating future programmed resurfacing schemes in this area, the proposed works will allow the A83 to return to full capacity for an extended period of time to minimise future disruption.

The first phase of these carriageway improvement works is due to take place this week on the night of Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 June. This will address a section of deteriorated carriageway in vicinity of the B828 junction and Loch Restil. These works will take place between the hours of 1900 and 0700 and will last for one night. The current traffic management at Rest and Be Thankful will be extended during the night shift working periods and operated under convoy control while works take place.

The second phase will commence on Sunday 11 June and conclude on the morning of Thursday 22 June. The nature of these works, within the extents of the recent debris pit works site, will require A83 traffic to be diverted onto the Old Military Road Local Diversion Route (OMR). Traffic will be diverted onto the OMR between the hours of 19:00 and 07:00. The A83 will be operated under temporary traffic lights during day time hours during this time. No works will take place on the night of Friday or Saturday, where the OMR will not be in use.

The third phase will improve the section within lower Glen Croe when overnight convoy operation will be implemented between 19:00 and 07:00 to undertake the work between Thursday 22 June and the morning of Tuesday 4 July. During this period night time works will also take place at Rest and Be Thankful to carry out drainage improvements. Temporary Traffic Lights will remain in place at RABT to allow these improvement to be carried out.

The fourth and final phases of resurfacing works, near Cobbler Bridge, will commence on Tuesday 4 July and will continue on nightshift until the morning of Tuesday 18 July. Convoy working will again be in operation on the A83 from 19:00 to 07:00 during this time with temporary traffic lights remaining in place during the daytime period. No works are currently planned to take place on Friday or Saturday nights.

This project will help address defects and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance. The project will also improve the road surface, creating a smoother ride for road users. Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as they can.

Following the completion, all traffic management will be removed from the A83 at Rest and Be Thankful and the route returned to two way traffic.

We thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete the works. We encourage motorists to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.

These works are weather dependant and in the event of unforeseen weather conditions the above timescales for traffic management may have to be extended until works are completed.

For your further information, on the night of Thursday 8 June the A83 will be closed at the north end of Arrochar due to unrelated water emergency repair works. The closure will be in place from 20:00 to 06:00 and once reopened the A83 will operate under convoy control until the works are complete by mid-day Friday 9 June.
