A702 SOUTH OF WEST LINTON REOPENED

January 4, 2023

  • Temporary traffic lights to remain in place until further notice

The A702 south of West Linton has been reopened, with traffic restricted to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic lights until further notice.

The trunk road had to be closed in the early hours of Wednesday 4 January 2023, after increased river flows, caused by heavy rain, damaged part of the Westwater Bridge foundations due to the force of the water.

Engineers from Transport Scotland’s Operating Company BEAR Scotland assessed the condition of the bridge to ensure it was safe to use before reopening under temporary traffic signals. It will be monitored closely and, if further damage occurs, further restrictions may be necessary.

Discussions with Transport Scotland are underway to identify an appropriate solution. It is likely a specialist contractor will be required.

Chris Tracey BEAR Scotland South East Unit Bridges Manager says: “Safety is our core priority. We appreciate that the restrictions will have an impact but urge drivers to be patient while we address the issues affecting this structure.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website www.traffic.gov.scot for up-to-date travel information and allowing extra time for their journey.
