UPDATE 01.09.26: Due to a schedule change in the wider programme, the A7 overnight resurfacing between Canonbie and Langholm will now require two additional nights of works, with completion scheduled by 06:00 on Saturday 26 September.
BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out essential overnight resurfacing works on the A7, between Canonbie and Langholm, from Monday 14 September 2026.
The project will address an area of deteriorated carriageway north of the B720 Hollows junction, approximately six kilometres south of Langholm.
Works will take place between 19:30 and 06:00 and are scheduled to be completed by 06:00 on Thursday 24 September. No works will take place on Saturday or Sunday nights.
A signed diversion route will be in place between Hawick and Canonbie. Traffic will be diverted from the A7 at the A698 junction via Mart Street, before following the A6088, B6357 and B7201 to rejoin the A7 south of Canonbie. The diversion will add approximately 7.7 miles and 20 minutes to affected journeys.
Emergency services will be given access at all times and local access for residents will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.
Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.
Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These resurfacing works will address an area of deteriorated carriageway, providing a safer and smoother road surface for road users.
“To ensure the safety of all, it’s essential that we close the road while resurfacing takes place, however we’ll carry out the works overnight to minimise disruption.
“If you are travelling, our advice is to plan ahead and allow extra time for the diversion.
“We’re grateful to road users and local communities for their patience and understanding while we complete these improvements.”
All works are weather dependent and subject to postponement in the event of adverse conditions.
