A1 WALLYFORD RESURFACING WORKS

October 19, 2026

Overnight road closures will take place on the A1 at Wallyford from Monday 2 November, as BEAR Scotland carries out essential resurfacing works on behalf of Transport Scotland.

The works will take place over five nights, between the hours of 20:30 and 06:00, and are scheduled to be completed by 06:00 on Saturday 7 November.

The works will address areas of deteriorated road surface on the A1 Wallyford northbound on-slip and the A1 southbound carriageway, providing a smoother and safer surface for all road users.

For safety, overnight closures will be required as follows:

A1 northbound – Monday 2 to Wednesday 4 November: The A1 northbound will be closed between Wallyford Junction and Old Craighall Junction. Northbound traffic will leave the A1 at Wallyford Junction and follow the A6094, A68 and A720 Edinburgh City Bypass to rejoin the A1 at Old Craighall Junction. The diversion will add approximately 2.2 miles and five minutes to affected journeys.

A1 southbound – Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November: The A1 southbound will be closed between Old Craighall Junction and Wallyford Junction. Southbound traffic will leave the A1 at Old Craighall Junction and follow the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, A68 and A6094 to rejoin the A1 at Wallyford Junction. The diversion will add approximately 2 miles and six minutes to affected journeys.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance and made aware of the works.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “We know these closures will cause some disruption, so the work has been scheduled overnight when traffic is quieter to minimise the impact.

“The resurfacing will repair worn sections of the A1 and provide a smoother, safer surface for all road users.

“Our teams will work to complete the improvements as safely and efficiently as possible, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience during this time.”

Real-time journey information is available from Traffic Scotland at www.traffic.gov.scot or on X at @trafficscotland.

All works are weather dependent and may be postponed or cancelled in the event of adverse conditions.
