A1 RESURFACING: SPOTT ROUNDABOUT TO THISTLY CROSS ROUNDABOUT

August 27, 2025

UPDATE 25 September 2025: Resurfacing works on the A1 north of Spott Roundabout have been completed ahead of schedule, one night earlier than planned.

As a result, the A1 will be open as normal this evening, with no closure required.

  • Overnight northbound carriageway closures 23 and 24 and 25 September 2025

The A1 northbound carriageway is set to benefit from an improved road surface, with resurfacing works planned between Broxburn Junction and Bowerhouse Junction on the nights of 23, 24 and 25 September.

The works will see Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland renew approximately 800 metres of carriageway on the A1, creating smoother and safer journeys for motorists

The works will be carried out with northbound carriageway closures in place from 19:30 to 06:00 each night:

  • 23, 24 and 25 September (3 nights) – The A1 northbound will be closed from Broxburn Junction to Bowerhouse Junction. Road users will be diverted between Broxburn Junction and Thistly Cross Roundabout via the A1087 and Summerfield Road through Dunbar, and the A199, adding approximately 8 minutes and 1.5 miles to affected journeys. The southern section of Spott Roundabout will also be closed, with access to the A1 from Spott village via the local road to Bowerhouse Junction on the A1. Access onto Spott Road to Spott village and Easter Broomhouse will be controlled at the road closure points.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times and all traffic management will be removed outwith working hours.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will improve safety and ride quality for users of the A1 northbound.

“Carriageway closures are essential while work is in progress, however we’ll do this overnight to minimise disruption.

“if you need to use the A1 northbound on the nights of 23, 24 or 25 September, our advice is to plan ahead and allow some extra time for the diversion.

“We’re grateful to road users and local residents for their patience and understanding while we complete these improvements.”

Emergency services and other relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
